Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal Pty Ltd – Proud Supporter of the Rawson Family Archive

As an active member of the Sarina and Mackay communities, Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal Pty Ltd (DBCT P/L) is proud to support the Rawson Family Archive Exhibition and Website.

The Rawsons were one of Mackay’s earliest pioneering families so it is critical that Sarina, Mackay and surrounding communities have access to the amazing snapshots of history as captured by the Rawsons themselves.

As Charles Rawson was involved in organising exploratory expeditions including the first European ascent of Mount Dalrymple, supporting the Rawson Archive Exhibition is of special significance to DBCT P/L.

About Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal Pty Ltd

DBCT P/L was formed in 1981 to manage, operate and maintain the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal, which is located within the Shire of Sarina, at the Port of Hay Point, and some 38 kilometres south of the Central Queensland city of Mackay.

The Port, which includes the adjacent Hay Point Services Terminal, is one of the largest coal export ports in the world. DBCT P/L currently operates the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal under an Operation and Maintenance Contract with companies in the Prime Infrastructure group (Prime Infrastructure), which hold long-term leasing and development rights for the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal.

Initial construction commenced on Stage One of the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal in 1981 and was completed by 1983 at a cost of $250 million. The first ship was loaded at Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal on 7 November 1983 and, one year later, Australia became, and has remained, the world’s largest coal exporter.

The major deposits at the mines that export coal through Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal are black coal or ‘Bowen Basin coal’ and comprise both coking and thermal coal types.

Designed with an initial capacity of 15 Million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal’s capacity has expanded significantly over the years.

Expansion Stages as follows:

Inception         14.55 Mtpa          1983
Stage 1           22.55 Mtpa          1990
Stage 2           26.55 Mtpa          1995
Stage 2A         28.55 Mtpa          1997
Stage 3           33.55 Mtpa          1999
Stage 4           37.55 Mtpa          1999
Stage 5           45.50 Mtpa          2002
Stage 6           54.50 Mtpa          2003

Located close to the Bowen Basin, Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal is ideally situated for coal handling and export, with a deep water port capable of further expansion and a shorter shipping time to overseas markets than southern competitors. It is ideally positioned to service existing and future customers. Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal’s close location to the Bowen Basin also reduces rail haulage. With world-class innovative technology for automated coal stacking and reclaiming, Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal continues to be one of the most reliable coal export ports in the world. Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal operates  24 hours a day.
