The House at The Hollow

There is great excitement with the completion of the new house at The Hollow. Again we can turn to Harold Finch-Hatton for a contemporary description:

‘The house itself is a large one-storied building, with a fourteen foot verandah all round covered with masses of every sort of creeper. It stands right on the river bank, which rises to an elevation of a hundred feet above the bed, and the view up the river is magnificent.’

At last

8 November 1871
AT LAST !!!
The house finished at 10 AM. Charley took about an hour in making up the contractors a/c.(could have done it easily in 3 minutes!) in the hope that somebody would turn up with a “breeze” from Bowman – balance due £393.11.9. cash in hand 3d & 1/6 in stamps – ditto in Bank 4/8! Total 6/5!!! Charley promised to meet contractor in Port on Saturday & pay him! Gave him the 6/5 for beer in the meantime!

The new houseLge

30 December 1871
We don’t care a button now that we have got - The new house at Sleepy Hollow!
Thy work is done
Thy race is run
Die “Seventy One”
Let the black pall
Over him fall
Night covers all
Who weeps for you?
Radiant and new
Comes “Seventy Two”
The wine cup bring
The king’s dead – sing
Long live the king!
