Crocodiles

According to H Ling Roth, who wrote about the Mackay District in the 1870’s, crocodiles were numerous along the banks of the Pioneer River.

The Hollow was also situated on the Pioneer River (on the spot where Mirani is now).

H Ling Roth mentions a photograph taken by Edmund Rawson of a crocodile shot by G N Martin in 1871 on the banks of the Pioneer River. The crocodile measured 15 foot 3 inches with a girth of 6 foot 6 inches and was quite possibly the reptile in the photograph.

Lulled by the stream22 August, 1871
Lulled by the stream, he basked and slept “ A perfect form in perfect rest” On hands and knees we did our best Across the sands we crawled and crept Alas! For hopes so soon bereft The dog rushed in and spoiled our shot, Be what we said remembered not We d----d the dog & then we left.
